Slayer Bossing in OSRS: A 10-Hour Journey Between Kalphite Queen and King Black Dragon
If you're like me and need to OSRS Gold make some serious OSRS gold, you might feel tempted to jump into the tried-and-true money-makers: Barrows runs, flipping on the GE, skilling, or grinding out God Wars Dungeon bosses. But rather than burn myself out on methods I’ve done a hundred times, I decided to dive into something that offers both nostalgia and challenge—Slayer bossing. Specifically, the Kalphite Queen (KQ) and King Black Dragon (KBD).
After all, Slayer isn't just for XP. It can be a surprisingly solid moneymaker, and it keeps things fresh with a wide rotation of enemies. This guide walks you through my 10-hour bossing journey, from KQ drops and deaths to the straightforward grind at KBD. The goal? Gold, collection log progress, and maybe that elusive pet.
Kalphite Queen Slayer Task Setup
The adventure began with a Kalphite Slayer task. That means Kalphite Queen is on the table, and she’s not just any boss—she’s an iconic piece of OSRS history. At the start, my Collection Log showed 204 KQ kills. No pet, one KQ head, and no jar. So yeah, pretty underwhelming. But that's all the more reason to grind.
Gear Loadout:
Slayer Helmet (task bonus)
Karil's Top + Verac's Skirt
Karil's Crossbow or Keris Partisan of Breaching (depending on the phase)
Dragon Warhammer (for defense reduction)
Divine Super Combat Potion
Antidote++
Sharks
Thralls (initially, but dropped halfway through)
House Teleport Tabs
Fairy Ring BIQ for fast access
Rope shortcut from Desert Hard Diary
Agility shortcut for faster entry
Pro Tip: Do your Desert Hard and Elite Diaries. The time saved is enormous. Skipping the long walk and being able to bank efficiently will make your KQ grind far more tolerable.
The Fight: KQ Kills and Loot Highlights
With my gear optimized and inventory ready, I dove into the Kalphite lair. The Keris Partisan of Breaching performed excellently with crush-style attacks—a massive boost against the Calphites. Combined with a few successful Dragon Warhammer specs, KQ melts fast.
Early RNG:
A few kills in and I saw the nostalgic Dragon Chainbody drop. Back in the day, it was 10m+ and the ultimate flex. Now? Around 200k, but still satisfying to see. At the one-hour mark, I hoped for the pet. No dice. Just some sketchy tick-eating to survive misplays.
Mid-Session Drops:
Dragon 2H Sword x2: At a 1/256 rate, pulling two of these was great for morale, even if they’re just 130k each now.
Dragon Pickaxe: A 1/400 drop and still around 700k GP. Classic drop, great nostalgia, and a solid payday.
Final Tally After KQ:
KQ Kills: 167
Slayer XP: 87,430
Notable Drops:
2x Dragon 2H Swords
2x Dragon Chainbodies
1x Dragon Pickaxe
Deaths: 3
Gear Retrieval Cost: ~900k GP
No pet, and now sitting at 366 total KQ kills. Still below the 1/3000 pet drop rate, so the grind continues.
Next Task: King Black Dragon (KBD)
After the brutal KQ grind, I received a King Black Dragon task. A breath of fresh air, honestly. Much simpler mechanics, less running around, and faster kill speed.
Gear Loadout:
Twisted Bow (yes, I’m that guy)
Black D’hide
Slayer Helm (imbued)
Necklace of Anguish
Barrows Gloves
Ring of Shadows
Mixed Hide Boots
Dragon Arrows (about 50 per trip)
Ranging Potion
Extended Antifire
Antidote++
2x Super Restores
Sharks
House Tab & Burning Amulet for access
Collection Log & Pet Goals:
At this point, I had 804 KBD kills. Two Dragonic Visage drops (extremely lucky), but no Prince Black Dragon. This pet is my favorite in the game—a little flappy dragon with major style.
The Fight:
KBD mechanics are easy: click, dodge flame, eat food. If you get frozen, heal up. It’s a DPS check more than a mechanics check. Twisted Bow shreds him, making the fights smooth and relatively low stress.
Final Thoughts: Was It Worth It?
So, did I make bank? Yeah, kinda. Between the rare drops, steady Slayer XP, and the sheer fun of chasing nostalgic bosses, I earned a solid return. Here’s a quick summary:
Gold Earned: Moderate (drops helped, deaths hurt)
XP Gained: Nearly 90k Slayer XP
Rare Drops: Dragon Chainbodies, 2H Swords, Dragon Pickaxe
Pets: Nope, still hunting
Would I Recommend Slayer Bossing?
Absolutely. If you're looking to mix nostalgia, challenge, and decent profits, Slayer bossing is a great way to go. It’s not as fast as high-tier PvM like Nex or ToA, but it’s consistent, engaging, and offers a chance at rare loot and pets. Just make sure your gear is optimized and you're ready for a few deaths along the way.
If nothing else, it’s one of the buy OSRS Gold most fun ways to grind Slayer and fill out your Collection Log. Good luck out there, and may the pets be with you.
